The Game
This is an update to Super Smash Bros., for the Nintendo 64.
New to this game is an adventure mode, which includes a side scrolling level like Super Mario Bros. and another one like the dungeons in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Adventure.
The Good
- The classic mode is no longer predictable. There is a lot of variety missing from SSB.
- Adventure mode is a welcomed twist. It's always fun to stomp on little goombas.
- Event mode can be really frustrating at times, but it also adds replay value.
- The trophys - not only do they give you something to collect, but they'll make you feel nostalgic.
- I thought Princess Toadstool and Bowser would be a great addition to the series, and I got my wish. (And Toadstool floats like she does in Super Mario Bros. 2! Nice touch.)
- The Pokemon arena background is worth mentioning. The monitor in the background shows off the GameCube's graphics, while the platform occasionally gives away to reveal a element themed platform for you to fight on.
- I love the Earthbound background. And yes, it's because I like that game.
- The credits are interesting. You get to shoot as many credits as possible as they fly by. When you're done, they give you your score.
The Bad
- Some of the hidden characters are just copies of other characters. (Pichu, Ganon, Falco, young Link, etc.)
- There is no story, so when you beat the game, there doesn't seem to be any poin.
- Adventure mode is ultimately disappoining. It's starts off great with the mushroom kingdom level, but then you'll find out that you're mostly fighting. Maybe the next SSB game will have more variety in the Adventure mode.
- Some backgrounds are dull, like the fountain one from the Kirby series.
...And The Rest
- Favorite character - Ness
- So where is that Earthbound sequel?
- Zelda seemed like an odd choice. But I guess it's neat that she switches back and forth between her princess mode and her Shiek mode.
- Might I suggest the kid from Kid Icarus? Whatever happened to that series?
- They included the DK rap from Donkey Kong 64. And it's a remix. Weird.
Bottom line - Definitely one of the best earlier games of this system. This game has tons of replay value.
